Romsons International: Pioneering Indian medical device manufacturing
The category winner of the ET MSME Awards 2024 has evolved from being a humble lab equipment maker in the 1950s to becoming an exporter par excellence. Here’s a look at its journey.

Romsons International has pioneered medical device manufacturing in India since 1952. Established as ‘Romsons Scientific and Surgical Industries’ by Ram Lal Khanna in Amritsar, the company began with laboratory and scientific equipment before expanding into disposable medical equipment, producing its first non-sterile Nelaton catheter in 1967. This marked the beginning of Romsons’ journey into the medical device industry.
In 1994, the company founded Romsons International in Agra, a wholly export-oriented unit. The following years saw significant milestones, including ISO 9002:1994 certification in 1999 and CE mark accreditation, enabling exports to European countries. In 2003, Romsons achieved ISO 9001:2000 certification, and by 2007, it had also obtained ISO 13485:2003 certification, underscoring its commitment to quality and regulatory compliance.
Romsons International has a portfolio exceeding 200 products across:
- Catheters, surgical gloves, and anaesthesia products
- Disposable syringes, IV cannulas, and infusion sets
- Mother and baby care products such as breast pumps and baby wipes
- Incontinence care products like adult diapers
- Diagnostic and monitoring devices, including glucometers and blood pressure monitors
- PPE kits and face masks
Romsons has earned numerous accolades for excellence, including awards from FICCI, CII, the Chamber of Commerce in India, and special recognition from the Ministry of MSME, Government of India. It won the Top Exporter of the Year (Manufacturing) category at the ET MSME Awards 2024, standing out from a pool of over 15,000 entries at India’s largest, most credible MSME awards.
