Khadi and Village Industries Commission ( KVIC) is now taking up promotion of fibre extracted from banana.

"We are promoting and thus facilitating research in extracting fibre from banana leaves which are abundant in eastern region, for production of wearable items, gifts and household items," said Siddhartha Roy, director at KVIC, West Bengal).

"We are promoting the extraction of fine, soft and durable yarn from the banana leaves for stitching them into clothes and to make it commercially viable," he added.

Roy also mentioned that the fibre would also be promoted and popularised through fashion shows in the long run just like how Khadi is promoted.

Elaborating on the mix usage of the fibre, Roy said the fibre can be put to use in making of handmade paper bag, statue, pen stand and not just wearable.
