India’s e-commerce future is bright, inclusive and transformative: Pralhad Joshi

Pralhad Joshi emphasised the government's commitment to support small businesses and foster consumer trust within the digital marketplace.

Delivering an address during Amazon SMBhav 2024, Pralhad Joshi, Minister of Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution and Minister of New and Renewable Energy, lauded India's growing e-commerce sector and said that it’s future is bright, inclusive and transformative.

He said that under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, our government is committed to support the e-commerce sector and small business in India.

“In India, we have long practices of respecting the consumers, often referring to them as god. The principle of safeguarding the consumer interests are mentioned in our sacred texts,” Joshi said.


He added that our ancient texts also had guidelines for regulating the trade. Further, he said that India will soon become the third largest economy. The country has more than 50 million Internet users and is already second largest Internet market with globally.

“The future of e commerce in India is bright inclusive and transformative. While digitalisation offered a lot opportunities, our government believes it is equally important for our consumers to feel confident and make informed choices and for the e-commerce platforms to gain the trust and the confidence of the consumer is equally very, very, very important,” he said.

The minister then went on to mention that the rapid growth of e commerce also brings the risk, especially for the consumer production and the device.

“Our government under the leadership our prime minister Modi has taken multiple initiatives to create a trusted e-commerce environment. The consumer production Act 299 has been enacted to address the unfair contracts, with stricter regulations and enhance e-commerce protection,” he said.
