Relief to traders, Chandigarh amends building bylaws

Providing a major relief to traders and commercial building owners, the UT administration on Monday amended Chandigarh Building Rules (Urban) 2017. The new notified rules will be called Chandigarh Building Rules (Urban) 2019.

CHANDIGARH: Providing a major relief to traders and commercial building owners, the UT administration on Monday amended Chandigarh Building Rules (Urban) 2017. The new notified rules will be called Chandigarh Building Rules (Urban) 2019.


Recently, Punjab governor and UT administrator V P Singh Badnore had given approval in this regard and accordingly, the finance department, estate-1, branch issued new notification. Nearly 50 building bylaw relaxations were given in the new notification.

According to the notification, the upper floor of SCOs will be allowed for shopping (display and sale of goods).Glazing of the compulsory verandah on the first and the second floors, both on front and rear sides of SCOs, and lodging-cum-restaurants in Sector 22 A, B and C is allowed. Covering of the rear courtyard of bay shops (single storey) in Chandigarh will be allowed in conformity with the building rules, the notification said.

The notification also allowed internal partition of SCOs, but subject to provisions of building bylaws. Besides, all shop owners keen to install air conditioners in the verandah shall fix these above the false ceiling in the verandah, the notification said.

The notification also allowed coverage of courtyards, which will bring relief to discos and restaurants in sectors 7 and 26.

Welcoming the new notification, Charanjiv Singh, Chairman, Chandigarh Beopar Mandal, said it was a long pending demand of allowing display and sale of goods in upper floors. There were number of other demands too which were notified by the administration. This notification will reduce litigation between building owners and UT estate office, he said.
