Pune Construction Engineering Research Foundation (PCERF) on Wednesday said it has developed a new maturity meter to test the strength of concrete more holistically.

“The indigenous meter will be available at 30-40% of the cost of the foreign maturity meter, currently available in the marker,” the foundation of over a 100 professional engineers said in a statement.

The maturity meter is required to test the strength of any concrete structure and take corrective action. “Currently, a sample of concrete is tested to predict the strength of the overall structure. This can be misleading. In the meter that we have developed, the strength of concrete is tested over the structure making a more widespread testing possible,” said Hemant Dhonde, who along with another structural engineer Rajesh Ghongade was instrumental in developing the device.

PCERF officials said they have applied for patent and are interested in first letting the big engineering and construction groups use it to get a feedback. “We are not looking at money only. It is more about proliferation of newer technologies in the Indian construction sector,” said Vishwas Lokare, president, PCERF.

The device, ready for commercial use, will be showcased at the construction expo called Constro 2020 in January at Pune.
