Karnataka: Heritage HDMC office to turn smart and green

Hubballi: The civic corporation office on Lamington Road, which is a heritage building, and Lamington School are set to get a green makeover soon, replete with solar panels and plantation on campus. The facelift will come at a cost of Rs 5 crore under the Smart City Project.

The park in front of Chittagupi Hospital will also be redeveloped.

“The buildings will have solar panels to generate electricity which will reduce their dependence on power companies. The Hubballi-Dharwad Municipal Corporation office and other buildings on the campus have set up rainwater harvesting systems already,” said SH Naregal, special officer of the Hubballi-Dharwad Smart City Limited (HDSCL). “We also plan to grow native vegetation in these locations. The makeover will be in keeping with Indian Green Building Council regulations.


“The campuses will be lit with solar-powered piezoelectric crystals. Smart dustbins will be placed and a smart waste disposal system will be adopted in these buildings,” Naregal said. “The HDMC main building, which is a major landmark in the city, and the park near it, will become must-visit spots.”

An HDSCL officer on condition of anonymity said the project has been in the pipeline for long. Tenders were invited thrice but vendors failed to meet the criteria in the technical bid, he said.
