November is almost here, so where did autumn go? A study says America’s trees are following different clocks
The calendar promises autumn, but the view outside may tell a less familiar story. There have many multiple researches about change in seasons and the findings challenge the idea that fall is simply arriving later everywhere.

November is almost here, so where did autumn go? A study says America’s trees are following different clocks
Why can autumn look different from what we expect?
We picture autumn in a different way and it feels like today is the day it is going to happen. You feel a cool but soothing breeze in the afternoon, and you expect the trees finally change color. You are excited to see the fall but it doesn’t happen at once. A cool breeze at one time is not going to suddenly make every tre change its color.Scientists have termed this time of natural events which keeps recurring as phenology. Autumn phenology means the leaves will change their color and fall. These are recurring events.
Scientists call the timing of recurring natural events phenology. Autumn phenology includes leaf colour change and leaf fall. Those are recurring events and are a part of the fall season.
The report published in Agricultural and Forest Meteorology analysed over 100 woody plant species across United States. The study was to understand how different species and regions react differently to different climates. It was done by researchers Xiaolu Li and colleagues.
What did the study find about autumn timing?
According to the 2026 study there was a huge difference in plant’s reactions based on if it grew in Eastern US and Western US. In the eastern United States, warmer summer temperatures were associated with leaves beginning to change colour later. In the West, rainfall had a stronger influence than summer temperature. Greater rainfall between January and March was associated with later colour change and leaf fall, according to the USA National Phenology Network’s explanation of the research.
The researchers used observations collected through Nature’s Notebook, a programme that records seasonal changes in plants and animals.
Their results suggest that rising temperatures could lengthen growing seasons in parts of the East. Western drought, meanwhile, could encourage earlier leaf fall and shorter growing seasons.
Why don’t shorter days make every tree change together?
You might expect that but you also need to consider the amount of daylight each tree is receiving. Once the days start to shorten, trees start preparing themselves for the winter season. They get a signal from the nature and their leaves reduce the production of chlorophyll which gives leaves the color green. Once green starts to fade, you can see other colors again. But the while process is impacted by the weather. NOAA had explained in its reports that an early winter frost or a drought season can cause leaves to fall before their colors fully develop.
Can neighbouring trees follow different autumn schedules?
According to research, yes it can happen. Species react differently to weather phenomenon. So when you look at the street which partly looks like autumn, now you can understand why some trees did not change.Pennsylvania’s Department of Conservation and Natural Resources mentioned in its reports that oaks typically develop their autumn colors after maples have shed their leaves.
Weather also affects the display itself. Warm, sunny days followed by cool, frost-free nights favour vivid colours. Warm autumn conditions may reduce their intensity.
Timing and appearance are separate questions. Leaves can change without producing the brilliant display someone remembers from another year.
Is climate change making autumn later everywhere?
While it can be a reasonable explanation, research supports a more complicated explanation. Different plants respond to different conditions. A warm summer can influence autumn timing differently from a dry growing season. The study does not diagnose the trees outside any individual window this October. Nor does one disappointing foliage trip establish a climate trend.
Its value lies in showing why broad claims about autumn “disappearing” miss regional differences. Familiar seasonal routines may become harder to schedule when the conditions shaping them change.
