- Roman Abramovich lost both his parents when he was 4. He was raised by his relatives. He dropped out of college and joined the Soviet Army
- He started as a street vendor and then worked as a mechanic in a shop. In the early stage of his career, he set up many businesses like toys manufacturing, personal security, timber and tyres
- In the early nineties, he became a close associate of Russian billionaire Boris Berezovsky and it is this friendship that got him close to top Russian politicians. Berezovsky introduced him to the then Russian President Boris Yeltsin
- It was Yeltsin's loans-for-shares program where Abramovich made his biggest bet. In 1995, he partnered with Berezovsky and bought Sibneft, a giant Soviet oil company, at a throwaway price of $100 million, the company was valued over $2.5 billion during that time
- He sold his controlling stake in Sibneft to Russia's Gazprom for $13 billion in 2005, becoming one of the world's wealthiest self-made billionaires
- Abramovich's closeness to Yeltsin, saw him being elected to the Duma in 1999 and the following year, he became the governor of Chukotka Autonomous Okrug, Russia's far east region
- He resigned as Governor in 2008, but during his tenure, the region saw tremendous development in education, infrastructure and highest birth rates in the country
- In 2001, Abramovic along with other partners founded Millhouse Capital in Britain to oversee assets in Russia, the company manages investments in sectors as diverse as aviation, power, banking and insurance
- In 2003, Abramovich bought the iconic Chelsea Football Club in West London, thereby becoming the first major foreign buyer of an English Premier League club; till 2008 he was at the top of the football club owners rich list
