We’re Like An Iceberg

Human personality is like an iceberg, with a little portion visible above the surface and a major chunk that drives our critical behaviour, below it. The real personality, mostly comprising physical and emotional aspects in common perception, is considered as the one belonging to visible portion of the iceberg. The ‘Titanic’ tragedy happened primarily because the submerged part of the iceberg went unnoticed.

We don’t want any Titanic moment in our lives. Hence, understanding of the complete personality is essential. Of the four key dimensions of our personality — physical, emotional, intellectual and spiritual — the latter two are not visible upfront; like in an iceberg, they lie beneath the surface. Physical and emotional aspects are more visible, and majority of us focus on developing them more, at the cost of the intellectual and spiritual sides that are actually the prime movers to keep our lives on the right track. Spiritual personality is about developing right beliefs, attitudes and values. I

t can be developed by extricating oneself from day-to-day activities and elevating one’s thinking beyond selfish interests by following various spiritual practices. For a fulfilling and happy life, the four wheels of our personality should be well balanced. In fact, like the two rear wheels of a tractor, the size of the intellectual and spiritual wheels should be much larger, as they constitute invisible, critical factors that drive our destiny
