AI tools are impressive and can simulate human language and analytical skills, but cannot surpass the grandeur of human intelligence. We don't train on data or algorithms, but on our lived experiences, our fallible notions, rising and falling, seeking our answers. Pope Leo asks us to protect the common good and challenges us to embrace our vulnerabilities. 'We must remember humanity flourishes not despite limitations but often through them.'
AI does not have guard rails of moral conscience, relational or spiritual capabilities, or accountability. Its powers are mechanical, and while human potential is endless, the pontiff emphasises the centrality of human beings in life processes and that technical power does not automatically entail the right to govern the human race. AI is not a force antagonistic to humanity nor inherently evil, but a reflection of those who devise it. We need to disarm AI, harness its benefits and prevent it from dominating humanity.
