Language of the spirit

German philosopher Schopenhauer's credo that the root of all suffering lies in human desire with every person constantly wanting more, achieving it, getting a temporary relief and but wanting even more, leading to a life of constant suffering, and striving, has strong echoes of Buddhism. He termed this as the 'will to live'. Though one may not agree that it leads to 'suffering', it certainly leads to lack of peace of mind. His solutions to get out of this vicious cycle are interesting. Apart from asceticism and compassion, he strongly advocated art as means of finding solace. And even in art forms, Schopenhauer considers music to be the best option.

Music is said to be intricately connected to spirituality. It creates the necessary environment for spirituality which, in turn, inspires soulful music. Pandit Jasraj's voice extending to three-and-a-half octaves, invoking Krishn in Raga Abeer Todi, can elevate us to a state of spiritual bliss. The Shabad kirtan set to Raga Bhairav can create a divine atmosphere. Gregorian chants, though difficult to comprehend, give you peace of mind. Sufi music exponent Abida Parveen asking us to 'jhoom, jhoom, jhoom', to swirl, let it go, makes us lighthearted, full of energy, optimistic. Given the fact most persons enjoy music, it is a tragedy that few understand it. But the power of music is such that even without understanding, it can transport you to a world close to the Divine.
