Is everything in the universe conscious to some degree? It may well be so, going by the increasing belief in panpsychism - that all matter is in varying degrees, aware. Human beings are not only conscious; they also have thoughts and intentions, unlike, say, a rock or a piece of string. But this does not mean that matter is completely devoid of consciousness; it only means that the degree of consciousness differs. And, possibly, in this domain, humans are at the apex on account of their heightened intellect and power of discrimination, whether they use it or not.

Apes and elephants, whales, dolphins and birds are all considered to have a fair amount of self-awareness. When the same logic is extended to lifeless objects, how does panpsychism work? Is a rock, piece of string or table conscious? Do we have the tools to be able to test this theory?

Human beings are able to function well with the five senses and in the rarest of rare cases, some are believed to also have a sixth sense, a deep intuition that enables them to experience something more. However, just because humans can hear only up to a certain decibel level of noise, it does not mean that higher decibels of noise do not exist. We just cannot hear them because we are not equipped to do so. Hence, we are not in a position to entirely rubbish panpsychism.
