Alchemy of a soothing word

In today’s fast-paced world, people are often too busy to pause and comfort those who are hurting. Yet, kind and reassuring words can offer immediate emotional relief to someone in distress.

In our fast-paced world, where constant distraction pulls us in many directions, being busy has become a default state. Parents balance demanding careers, teachers race against rigid curriculums, and healthcare professionals move hurriedly through overcrowded shifts. There is just no time to soothe pain.

Yet, when a person is vulnerable, sincere words provide immediate emotional succour. From a parent, a gentle 'I am always here for you' offers an anchor of unconditional safety. An older sibling's empathetic understanding can act as a salve. From a friend, validating words counter the loneliness that so often accompanies mental distress. In a harsh hospital ward, a doctor or nurse offering reassuring words can ease panic, making the pain more bearable.

Kind words in times of pain create deep social and spiritual bonds, and strengthen that essential human connection. They act as a spiritual ointment, reminding the sufferer that they belong to a compassionate whole.

In his book Cutting for Stone, Dr Abraham Verghese shares these wonderful lines spoken by a professor in medical school, 'Tell us please, what treatment in an emergency is administered by ear?' I met his gaze and did not blink. 'Words of comfort,' I said to my father.
