Considerable deliberations have already gone into GST. The Centre and most of the states are on board with minor reservations. It’s time for Jaitley to bite the bullet.

The Centre’s ambitious goal to adopt GST from April 2016 is welcome. However, the Centre and states have not arrived at a consensus, in spite of talks spanning many years. Laws must be framed and the administration geared to implement the new tax system.

GST is of dubious merit. For all practical purposes, India is one market. The only problem is that of logistics and border checks. That will not change even if GST is adopted.

With the 1% extra tax on interstate sales, we will be at the bottom of the list of countries in ease of doing business. This will also promote Inspector Raj. That’s the reason states want the extra tax. Why bring in GST at all?

Though the Centre has postponed the discussion and vote on the GST Bill till next week, its efforts to build consensus with the states for its implementation are commendable.
