When Kim wore a Marilyn to the met

On May 2, Kim Kardashian, famous for being famous, wore Marilyn Monroe's iconic (white) skin-coloured dress - the one the actor wore when popping out of a cake while singing 'Happy Birthday' to John F Kennedy in 1962 - at the Met Gala in New York. The stunning dress, with more than 2,500 crystals stitched on to it, was custom-made for Monroe based on a sketch made by Bob Mackie, then an understudy of French haute couturier Jean Louis. Ripley's, of Believe It Or Not! fame, bought the dress in 2016 at an auction for $4.8 million. Kardashian, who must have seen the dress at the Ripley's museum in Los Angeles, requested it for loan for the gala. Ripley's happily complied. After all, the dress would get a new lease of life, especially among younger people who didn't know their Marilyn Monroe from their Marilyn Manson.

Ripley's has denied the charge made by a mannequin supply company owner - and handled the dress once - that the 'fabric was stretched at the back zipper' and some of the hand- stitched crystals are missing. Is this, then, actually a case of discontent against a cultural icon being worn by another cultural icon? Inspired, we'd like Deepika Padukone to politely ask the queen of England if she could borrow her crown to wear at, say, the next Filmfare Awards. That way, more folks here will then finally get a peek of the Koh-i-Noor.
