Vat is this! Vegans versus Vegetarians

Virat Kohli’s egg-before-wicket decision is his own. No third umpire is needed

Virat Kohli is first a cricketer, then a vegetarian, the latter description being a fact that he disclosed in an interview last weekend talking about his dietary habits. But it seems even that straight bat of his has been unable to deflect the peptic curiosity of ingrates who cast aspersions on his vegetarianism. So, did he get flak from non-vegetarian hoodlums and other redneck agents of red meat? Nope. Driving a veg between him and his dietary choice were fellow vegetarians. Some hard cores, upon learning that Kohli’s meals mainly comprised ‘lots of vegetables, some eggs, 2 cups of coffee, dal, quinoa, lots of spinach, love dosa too’, jumped on to the ‘down unda’ he mentioned. As the Indian captain explained without sledging that he was not a vegan but a vegetarian — the former forgoing food products coming from animals like milk and eggs, while the latter doesn’t eat meat or fish — some nuts taunted him asking which tree eggs grow on.

This skirmish between vegetarians and vegans is making non-veg spectators chuckle even in the West. Apparently, Britain and the US are seeing an increasing number of vegetarians grumble upon finding cheese and eggs removed from menus in ‘vegetarian’ restaurants. The schism in the non-non-vegetarian world will be interesting to follow. Meanwhile, watch this buffet space.
