The lesser-known, quieter queen

Since we have detected a strong appetite for anything royal and monarchic even in the theoretically egalitarian 21st century, we thought we'd bring news of Margrethe Glucksburg, the queen of Denmark. While we are used to knowing only one queen during our times, and since we associate only Queen Gertrude, Hamlet's mum, as the Danish queen, it wouldn't be out of place to acquaint our dynastically-minded readers of Margrethe II. Since last week, she has been Europe's longest-serving head of state - and the world's longest-reigning monarch - having taken up her job in 1972. A Cambridge graduate in archaeology, unlike most other royals, she has pursued interests beyond the usual monarchic business of 'duty', and has conducted archaeological digs as well as has her illustrations published (including for editions of J R R Tolkien's The Lord of the Rings).

When she was crowned, 45% of Danes were in favour of monarchy. Today, some 80% like the idea, much of it due to the charm of their 82-year-old chain-smoking (since 2006, only in private) queen. Celebrations for Margrethe's golden jubilee were cancelled in January due to Covid restrictions. This weekend, planned street parties to mark the occasion were again called off to respect the death of an older royal in a neighbouring monarchy. So, quietly and tastefully, we raise a glass to her majesty.
