TGIGF! Thank god it's not Monday

TGIGF! For those less inclined towards acronyms, including INRI - street Latin for 'Iesus Nazarenus, Rex Iudaeorum', or Jesus the Nazarene, King of the Jews (the language clearly lacking a 'J') - that's Thank God It's Good Friday. Considering it's a day that comes once a year, it would have made a bad choice for a restaurant chain brand name. But the fact that today is not just Friday but a good one can do with extra recognition. For practising Christians, it's more of a pious day than an Aussie kind of 'Goo(Fri)day Mate!' After all, the day commemorates a mixed baggage - when 1,990-odd days ago, Jesus Christ was crucified by the Roman authorities outside Jerusalem's walls revealing him as mortal son of god. But it also - spoiler alert! - anticipates Christ's resurrection two days later on Easter.

For the Christian and non-Christian alike, however, it is extremely fortuitous that the day marking Christ's crucifixion always, without fail, falls on a Friday. In other words, just when the weekend starts. For those with a positive bent of mind, having an extended weekend with a Monday holiday (literally, 'holy day') could have been grand too. But it doesn't have the same punch. So, without making plans to go to TGI Friday, may we suggest thanking god, whichever variety that tickles your fancy, that it's jumma today, and a pretty good one too.
