Orcas resurface in killer appearance

In a stunning twist of marine melodrama, orcas - known rather unfairly as 'killer whales' even as they are really big black-and-white dolphins - seem to have traded their usual icy Pacific haunts for a tropical getaway near India's west coast. Several pods of orcas - also not to be confused with nasty Orcs, J R R Tolkien's ogre-like violent creatures from his The Lord of the Rings - have been spotted off the stretch from Nivti in Maharashtra to Malpe in Karnataka. These oceanic thespians, usually living in the waters of Antarctica, Norway and Alaska, have brought a splash of monochrome glamour to our turquoise waters.

So, is it some nifty side effect of global warming that brings these dolphins to the warmer climes? Or is it that we didn't really know how cosmopolitan they are? Probably a mix of both. Marine biologists, who had spotted orcas last year in Goan waters and Maharashtra's Ratnagiri-Sindhudurg coastline in 2019, are intrigued by this intercontinental migration, wondering if the orcas are seeking an underwater script rewrite or just testing the waters for a potential Bollywood cameo. As they breach and frolic, and make their friendly presence underline how inappropriate they are to be called 'killer whales', one can't help but think: move over dolphins, there's a new pod in town, and they've got killer style in their B&W tuxes.
