Last week, there was a happy union between two members of two species - human and crocodile - that was noted with incredulity by many, with mirth by others. But when the mayor of the Mexican town of San Pedro Huamelula 'married' a caiman - a cousin creature of alligators - in a traditional ceremony to 'bring good fortune', for us, it reinforced the interconnectedness that exists between all living things. The 'wedding' ceremony between Victor Hugo Sosa and Alicia Adriana - there is no reason why humans bearing names are perfectly normal, while reptiles having an individual tag isn't - was as sacral as all nuptials go. Sosa even planted a kiss on his bride according to a ceremony that has been in play for the last 230-odd years since the Chontales and Huaves ceased conflict and found peace through a marital alliance.

Humans 'marrying' non-humans - India has its own examples of people marrying dogs, goats, trees - is also a wonderful reminder about what the act of marriage is: not just a social contract between two individuals but an alliance between two families. In the case of inter-species 'marriage', families just happen to be in terms of biological classifications. The fact is that for two people to be loyal and loving to each other, marriage per se is hardly the only way to show it. We wish the Mexican couple a long, happy life.
