For nostalgists, B-Day is the day

The Union budget, bless its sincere soul, is such a twee 20th-century thing. For boomers who remember, it's an annual ritual that - despite the switch from a fat sheaf of papers in a red briefcase to a slim tablet in a red 'bahi khata'-style pouch - smells of fax machines and pocket calculators. The budget, for those who need that kind of fix, is like that old uncle who insists on telling you the same story at every family gathering. Sure, you nod and smile. But, really, you're thinking about what's for dinner. In February 2025, we have more interesting interests and pressing matters. The problem about the Union budget isn't so much that it has lost most of its purpose, but more about it being stuck to an optics that's B&W even on a 4K Ultra HD colour TV screen. A few lines in Sanskrit, Tamil, or of Tagore won't change that.

But for those who make a rozi-roti out of it, fiscal deficit, capital expenditure, direct taxes... must hold a thrill the way Arthashastra is a page-turner for the Chanakya fangirl. So, who are we to judge? Especially when so many good people gush about it no matter what the FM announces. The sheer cheering is enough to make us all thankful for dear life.
