Democracy is under deletion, iNvestigate!

This being one of those days when the big news at the Gymkhana and other clubs across India - where social distancing long predates any contractable viral disease - is the British queen granting her first audience after recovering from a bad back, we will be excused for blowing out of proportion a relevant news that was breaking out of proportion on Wednesday. To be fair, it is political news - well, considering it involves a politician. Trinamool Congress MP Mimi Chakraborty (who is also an actor) let the world know via Twitter that '7000 pictures 500 videos All got deleted from gallery I don't know what to do cry or cry out loud' [Chakraborty's punctuation]. And, by gallery, she did not mean the National Gallery of Modern Art, but the gallery of her iPhone. This is why India needs to be so wary of foreign tech companies stealing the precious data of our citizens.

It's still not been made clear whether Chakraborty's tragedy is going to be discussed in Parliament when it meets again for the winter session scheduled from the end of this month. But such a huge data 'theft' certainly should mean Apple needing to answer for what looks like a cider-crime. As Chakraborty's party leader, we expect Mamata Banerjee to demand an independent inquiry into the shameful matter. iPhones today, it could well be EVMs tomorrow.
