Have you noticed how White supremacy gets a long leash in our neck of the woods? The coverage of the shooting in a predominantly Black neighbourhood in Buffalo, New York state, last Saturday, once again portrays the perpetrator as a 'mentally unstable' White kid who has gone off the rails. It is fair to say the killer teen is, indeed, mentally unstable, and having been fed on a diet of race hatred, did go violently off the rails. But if his 108-page 'manifesto' outlining the 'great replacement' theory - that there is apparently a grand strategy to overwhelm the US' White population with other ethnicities through immigration and higher birthrates - had been based on some variant of Brown supremacy, it is very likely to have marked out 'Browns' in general, rather than 'mentally unstable' lone wolves among them.

There is, of course, nothing called Brown supremacy - unless one counts desi racism (mostly against Blacks and 'Chinese') that one sees from time to time when subcontinentals play at being White. But there is the other supremacy pegged on religion, whose most publicised model is 'jihadism'. Does race bigotry not make the 'ideological' cut beyond colonial or 'civil rights' history? Whites may nitpick. But when Browns cherry-pick whitewash White fundamentalism as flashes in the pan, systemic colour blindness is at play.
