USAID backs Minister Modi’s initiatives on clean India: Rajiv Shah

USAID chief Rajiv Shah is the seniormost India-American official in the Barack Obama administration. He is in India to attend the World Economic Forum. ET met Dr Shah to discuss the dynamics of India-US relations and the role of Indian-Americans. Excerpts:

Did Prime Minister Modi’s US visit help correct sentiments in bilateral ties and contribute in raising the confidence of US administration and investors in India?

There is a huge excitement regarding opportunities in bilateral ties. I am here within five weeks of Prime Minister Modi’s historic visit to the USA as a follow-up on some of the decisions. This shows that both countries are eager to expedite some of the decisions that was reached between the leaders. I had excellent meetings with both ministers and private players here, and USAID had extended support to Prime Minister Modi’s initiatives on Clean India Initiative, renewable energy and Jan Dhan Yogna.

What role is USAID playing to support development and capacitybuilding programmes worldwide?

USAID, which is in the forefront of combating Ebola worldwide, has also sought India’s help with regard to providing medical personnel. We are also doing joint projects in Afghanistan and its reconstruction.

Delhi is upset over reports that US is planning to support a power project in PoK. Your views on this?

USAID is committed to meeting energy demands in South Asia. We have discussed with India guidelines under which funding from FIs for this project is being sought.
