'Business can help build links, change perceptions'
The business community in India and Pakistan have decided to take the lead in demonstrating to the government the merits of working together against all odds. Amin Hashwani, President, Pakistan-India CEOs’ Business Forum talks to ET about how business interests can help usher in peace. Excerpts:

What impact did 26/11 have on India-Pakistan trade?

Trade was definitely impacted after the Mumbai attacks. But it is only a matter of time. Given the level of interest among the business communities towards promoting economic cooperation, trade will certainly pick up.

Do you think track-three diplomacy can play a tangible role in improving relations?

Most certainly. The Aman Ki Asha initiative was initially about arts and culture, and now it has included business. Through business you start building sustainable links between the countries, change perceptions and create vested interest for peace. Business communities start lobbying with respective governments to promote peace. And politicians also do look for support from the civil society to egg them on.

What is the India-Pakistan joint CEO’s forum trying to achieve?

We are trying to bring business people from both sides together. On Monday, we did joint industry roundtables on IT and textiles. We discussed challenges and opportunities and areas of possible collaborations. The group decided to come up with a joint paper of recommendations in a few months and promote it with the respective governments.

What is the business community’s view on India’s demand for most favoured nation status from Pakistan?

India should get MFN status. There is no argument about it... But for that to happen, India has to create a level playing field by bringing down its non-tariff barriers like excessive checks and documentation.
