‘Bain is Bigger, Global and Deeper’

We are a public limited company run by a board of 10 directors, four of which are from Bain, says Tiger Tyagarajan of Genpact.

In an interview with ET, Amit Chandra of Bain and Tiger Tyagarajan of Genpact speaks about the growth and expansion plans.

On Bain running Genpact

TYAGARAJAN: We are a public limited company run by a board of 10 directors, four of which are from Bain. We run the company, not Bain. We do have five people from Bain helping, but that’s more of leveraging the network. We research 2,000 global companies a year for potential business. We have in-house team doing the research and now we are leveraging Bain’s capabilities as well.

On Bain unlocking value in Genpact

CHANDRA:We think this is a growth industry in which Genpact stands very tall. We believe companies that stand tall will grow faster. We tend to buy leaders. We try to help management teams to connect the dots. Genpact is no different. We have invested in the best team in the business. And we think there are lot of interesting choices that this team can make.

On 6 months of Bain in Genpact

TYAGARAJAN: Bain is not that dissimilar than other investors except in scale and size. Earlier, we tried to use our GE network to access new relationships. That continues with a new set of people, the difference being that Bain is bigger, global and deeper.

On Bain’s engagement style

CHANDRA: Bain’s style is very consultative. Our DNA is out of a consulting company. We like to be in a position to be good partners, able to take their decisions to do things better. There’s no reason why we would not want to connect some of our portfolio companies who have the requirements to work with a leader like Genpact. The standalone BPO opportunity, by itself, is huge; connecting portfolio companies will be the icing on the cake.

CHANDRA: There will be consolidating in two ways. One, clients will prefer to work with leaders who have differentiated capability. Two, the process puts lot of pressure on tier-II and tier-III players.
