US President Donald Trump
The US Supreme Court's 6-3 decision on Friday striking down Trump's 'Off with his head!' tariffs is a vital reaffirmation of constitutional order. For too long, the Trump regime treated International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA) as a magic wand, conjuring hafta on nearly every country under the guise of 'national emergency'.

The court has now reminded the Oval oligarchy that emergency powers are not blank cheques, and that tariffs - taxes by another name - belong squarely under the US Congress' authority.

The ruling is a rebuke to the dangerous inflation of executive power. Trump's attempt to unilaterally reshape global trade was not only unlawful but economically reckless.

The worry was that it was being 'normalised'. It still may be, but at least it's been called out for what it is by an entity that matters even to Trump and his Mar-a-Lago frat boys. Fundamentally, Trump tariffs are about MAGA hurting America - American businesses and consumers bearing the brunt of higher prices, while allies and rivals alike saw US trade policy as slot machinery powered on whim.

By rejecting this overreach, the court has restored predictability to the global economy and reaffirmed that American presidents can't simply declare emergencies to bypass legislative oversight like some Austin Powers villain.

Chief Justice John Roberts' majority opinion, joined by both conservative and liberal justices, underscores the bipartisan recognition that unchecked executive authority corrodes democracy.

The Constitution 'very clearly' vests Congress with the power to impose tariffs, and the court's ruling reasserts that separation of powers is not optional - it's foundational. Trump bhakts may lament the loss of a blunt instrument. But the truth is that trade policy requires nuance, negotiation and accountability. The court just strengthened America's institutions. By striking down the tariffs, the justices have ensured that future presidents cannot weaponise emergency statutes to bulldoze economic policy.
