It is unfair to demand that superannuating government and state functionaries should not be considered for sinecure jobs later on in their lives. It is akin to asserting that industrialists and well-heeled professionals should voluntarily adopt an abstemious lifestyle once they reach a certain age or step down from their corner-office perches.

The latter would be deemed unfair by most people on the premise that these individuals should not be forced to spend the rest of their lives in circumstances and standards that are less salubrious than what they had hitherto been accustomed to. So, it stands to reason that those from other walks of life (such as government) who seek post-retirement perches should be shown similar sympathy. After spending at least two-thirds of their adult lives cushioned by the benefits of government service, it does seem cruel to expect them to revert to aam aadmi levels, and occupy their minds with quotidian bijlipaani-gas issues rather than lofty matters of state.

The vicissitudes of non-privileged existence is not for the faint-hearted. And no one knows it better than the privileged. Thus, it is unlikely that any government will harden its heart towards its own and deny them comforting crutches in their golden years. After all, this year’s decision-maker may well be next year’s retiree….
