Private space invaders: Skyroot's perfect debut validates India Inc’s space push - repeat launches will prove the model

At 12.05 pm on Saturday, a slender all-carbon-composite rocket lifted off from Satish Dhawan Space Centre in Sriharikota, Andhra Pradesh. Minutes later, it secured a place in India's space history. Vikram-1, built by startup Skyroot Aerospace, became the first orbital rocket to be designed, built and flown by a private Indian company.

It succeeded on its first attempt, carrying 2 nano-satellites, Skyroot's SCOPE and Grahaa Space's SOLARAS, plus Cosmoserve Space's orbital-debris-capture robotic arm Embrace, into a 450-km low Earth orbit. It also carried 2 symbolic payloads: a floral artwork 'Cosmic Bloom', and a gold micro-rocket bearing sculptures of famous Indian scientists, each smaller than a grain of rice.

Vikram-1 is easy to misread as a single dramatic event. In reality, it's the culmination of a 6-year policy push. GoI opened the space sector to private participation in 2020, formalised it through Indian Space Policy 2023 and created IN-SPACe as a single-window regulator. India has gone from one space startup in 2014 to more than 400 today. The sector has grown to over $8 bn, and is projected to reach $80 bn within a decade.


What made this flight possible was Isro making its infrastructure available. Solid motors were cast and static-tested at Sriharikota while the 3D-printed liquid-fuel engine, Raman, was flight-qualified at Liquid Propulsion Systems Centre. A 6-year-old company could not have built and tested the entire system from scratch.

Vikram-1 shares hardware heritage with Isro's own rockets, but sits inside a different ownership and incentive structure. It was funded by private VC, chasing commercial small-satellite customers on its own commercial terms, not directed by a GoI mission plan.

That is where it differs from the US model. Under Nasa's Commercial Orbital Transportation Services programme, SpaceX designed, built and tested independently, with Nasa acting as a customer through fixed-price milestone contracts rather than a technical partner. Both models distribute risk, cost and IP differently.

The scale of this venture is smaller than Isro's flagship projects. But that's also its strength. Vikram-1 lifts 350 kg to low Earth orbit and 260 kg to sun-synchronous orbit, putting it alongside Rocket Lab's Electron rather than Falcon 9, or even Isro's far larger PSLV.

The fair comparison for Vikram-1 is Electron. On that measure, one fact stands out: Rocket Lab's Electron failed on its first orbital attempt in 2017 while SpaceX's Falcon 1 failed 3 times before reaching orbit on its fourth attempt in 2008. A clean maiden flight is the exception, not the rule. That reflects well on Isro's hand-holding model, even if it's slower and less independent than the US approach.

Why does India need this when Isro flies rockets? Isro is stretched thin, juggling Chandrayaan-4, Shukrayaan and Gaganyaan alongside routine launches. Failure of PSLV-C62 grounded PSLV fleet for over a month, delaying NewSpace India Ltd's commercial customers. Shifting commercial launches to private players would free Isro to focus on research and deep-space exploration.

For structural reasons, a state agency will struggle to serve the commercial small-satellite market. National missions will always take priority over commercial customers while budget cycles and procurement rules favour caution over the fail-fast iteration that VC rewards.

Private players fill that gap. That would clear Isro's backlog for Indian startups such as Pixxel and Dhruva Space, and let India bid for the global small-satellite launch market currently split between Rocket Lab and a handful of Chinese firms.

That market is exclusive. Only the US and China have private companies that have independently reached orbit. Europe and Japan are still trying. Vikram-1 puts India in that club ahead of much wealthier rivals, giving smallsat operators a credible alternative to the US-China axis while building on NSIL's record of launching 141 satellites, 138 of them for foreign customers.

But one clean flight does not make an industry. Sustainability needs repeatable manufacturing, a real order book, launch-pad access and enough capital to bridge the years to profitability. Rocket Lab took 7 years and dozens of launches to reach near-monthly cadence, and still isn't reliably profitable. SpaceX's launch business only became sustainable with Falcon 9 reuse.

Skyroot's claim of 'regular launches' is not yet proven. The next few flights and whether the cryogenic Vikram-2 arrives on schedule in 2027 will tell us more.

Who buys rides on a rocket like this? Likely customers include Earth-observation constellations, machine-to-machine and tracking satellites, in-space servicing and debris-removal missions, tech demonstrators, defence microsatellites, and operators needing urgent replacement launches.

Whether it's lucrative is another matter. This is a thin-margin niche that has claimed casualties like Virgin Orbit and Astra. Skyroot's edge will have to come from genuinely cheaper manufacturing, through 3D-printed engines and composite structures, or from becoming default domestic and regional launch provider for South Asia, West Asia and Africa.

Indian astrophysics groups have never lacked ideas, only launch slots, having waited years behind national payloads on crowded PSLV manifests. A reliable, on-demand small launcher changes that. The same applies to space-weather microsatellites, X-ray and gamma-ray-burst monitors building on AstroSat and Aditya-L1's heritage.

Vikram-1's real significance isn't the flight itself, but testing whether India's private sector can turn one perfect launch into a routine exercise. If it can, the biggest winners won't be just Skyroot's investors, but the entire private sector.
