Velouria by The Pixies

The Pixies' 'Velouria', from their 1990's album Bossanova, is a love song picked up by a radio telescope. Its guitars surge and glitter. Kim Deal's bass gives the melody a pulse. Somewhere behind them, a theremin seems to announce that ordinary gravity has been suspended. Yet, for all its glorious strangeness, the song is tender. Black Francis sings as though he has found someone miraculous and is slightly astonished she might just stay.

The line, 'We will wade in the shine of the ever' has planetary vibes to it while having the contours of the human heart. A small promise between two people is turned for a brief stretch of a bar into a place they might enter together. The words feel less written than discovered, as if Francis briefly remembered a dream and then goes into the chorus of 'My Velouria, my Velouria/ Even I'll adore ya, my Velouria' - with its brazenly childish rhyming - to go find it again.

'Velouria' has the force of a rock song and the delicacy of a half-remembered summer. The song leaves you longing for some distant future nostalgia.
