Playing a musical instrument

Taking out a musical instrument to play is wonderfully rewarding. And, if there is company, well, there you go: a pop-up concert is underway. Most importantly, it's fun.

Playing a guitar, piano, harmonica, harmonium or any other instrument fosters discipline and patience. The process of learning to play, practising techniques and refining your skills demands dedication and commitment. Overcoming challenges and progressing in skill levels are highly satisfying experiences.

Playing also lowers inhibitions, with the instrument becoming an extension of yourself. It also connects everyone on a participatory level, drawing everyone in the vicinity in with appreciation, if not also joining in.


It's also about bringing to the room something that was unexpected and untethered. In our culture where playing a musical instrument is more exception than norm, playing an instrument brings a joyous surprise element to any gathering.

It is a source of personal satisfaction, a platform for self-expression, and a means of connecting on an immediate, genuine level with others. So, don't just play music on your sound system - or play the fool - pick up an instrument and play.
