Independence Day 2026: Two-way freedom

At the neighbourhood Independence Day parade, a politician is shouting into the mic: 'Remember, it is because of our brave freedom fighters that we are free citizens today!' A man in the crowd waving a 'Freedom Sale' flyer yells, 'Then why are we stuck in traffic for three hours watching you wave?'

The politician smiles. 'Because freedom means you can complain. Independence means we don't have to listen.'

Class Struggle

A teacher announces, 'Today, you are free! No homework, no tests, no rules.' The students cheer wildly. Ten minutes later, chaos reigns - chairs flying, pens breaking against the wall, someone trying to take off the light so that it can be used as a light sabre.


The teacher shouts, and then commands the class to sit, else... 'Congratulations,' he tells the cowering students, 'You've discovered why dictatorships exist.'

Dependent Independence

A man tells his boss, 'I'm resigning to be independent!' The boss nods, 'Fine, but remember independence means no salary, no office, no coffee machine.'

The man beams: Exactly! I'll be free!

Two weeks later, he's back at the office, sheepishly asking: Can I be independent with a salary? Turns out, freedom tastes better with free coffee.
