Generosity isn't a class thing

Freakonomics Radio's episode Are the Rich Really Less Generous Than the Poor? challenges a stereotype - that wealthier people are less generous. Host Stephen Dubner guides listeners through past lab experiments suggesting the rich are more selfish, then introduces economists Jim Andreoni, Jan Stoop and Nikos Nikiforakis, who designed a real- world test in the Netherlands. Misdelivered envelopes containing visible cash or bank cards were dropped at the homes of clearly identified rich and poor households. The result: wealthy households returned envelopes at roughly twice the rate of poorer households, contradicting conventional assumptions.

This discussion highlights why lab-based studies can mislead: artificial settings, experimenter effects and uneven incentives often skew behaviour. Field evidence, however, suggests that, when financial pressure and need are accounted for, basic human generosity is similar across income levels.

It also prompts reflection on how wealth is created. As Jeff Bezos noted, wealth comes from creating value for others. Seen this way, those who accumulate wealth by serving others may naturally extend that mindset to acts of honesty and giving.
