Slovenia is joining a growing group of EU nations that have introduced digital nomad visas. Countries like Portugal, Spain, Croatia, Greece, Estonia, and Germany already offer special permits for remote workers from around the world. These visas allow digital nomads to live in Europe while working for employers or clients based elsewhere, making it easier for them to stay longer and experience life in popular tourist and cultural hubs across the continent.

Slovenia will launch a digital nomad visa from November 21, 2025. The one‑year permit will allow non‑EU and non‑EEA nationals working for foreign employers or clients to live in Slovenia.

This is the first time Slovenia has introduced an official route for remote workers. According to the authorities, the goal is to attract digital nomads to a country known for its Alpine landscapes, picturesque towns and affordable living compared to nearby Italy or Austria.

Why Slovenia?
Slovenia is promoting itself as an attractive destination for digital nomads. Its capital, Ljubljana, has a growing number of coworking spaces. Other popular spots for remote workers include Maribor, Celje, Kranj and Koper. The country is celebrated for its natural beauty — from Triglav National Park in the mountains to its short but scenic Adriatic coastline — making it an ideal option for remote workers looking for a quieter, affordable place to live and work.

Who can apply?
The visa is open to non‑EU and non‑EEA nationals working remotely for employers or clients based outside Slovenia. Applicants must be:

– Employed by a company located outside Slovenia
– A contractor or freelancer working for a foreign business
– Self‑employed, providing services to clients located outside Slovenia

What are the income and permit rules?
The visa will be valid for 12 months and cannot be renewed. However, digital nomads can reapply after a six‑month break from the country. Family members can also join the main visa holder for the same period, but must respect the same restriction — no working for Slovenian employers.

Applicants must prove they have enough income to support themselves throughout their stay. Acceptable documents include recent payslips, bank statements and freelance or employment agreements. The exact income threshold will be announced later.

How and where to apply?
People can apply online or at a Slovenian consulate or embassy. Those already in Slovenia can submit an application at a local administrative unit and receive a temporary residence certificate while the application is being processed.

What are the restrictions?
The digital nomad visa allows remote work exclusively for employers or clients based outside Slovenia. The authorities have made it clear that accepting work from Slovenian businesses, or selling goods and services within the country, is not allowed. Failure to do so may result in visa cancellation and future restrictions on entry into the country.

With its new visa, Slovenia joins the growing list of countries offering a dedicated permit for digital nomads. The initiative aims to attract talent, boost long‑term tourism and provide a clear path for remote workers looking for a safe, affordable and scenic base in Europe.
