New Zealand will relax health insurance requirements for the Peak Seasonal Visa (PSV) from April 19, 2026, in a move aimed at making compliance easier for migrants and employers and reducing delays in visa processing.

The change will align insurance requirements with products currently available in the New Zealand market. Authorities said the revision is intended to reduce uncertainty in applications and improve processing timelines for employers hiring seasonal workers.

Key changes to insurance coverage rules

Under the updated rules, PSV health insurance will no longer be required to cover repatriation of remains in all circumstances. Insurance providers will also be allowed to exclude coverage for certain conditions, including pre-existing illnesses, sexually transmitted infections, pregnancy and childbirth (except complications), HIV-related illness, and cases involving alcohol or non-prescribed drugs.

The policy change comes as the government noted that existing insurance products did not fully meet earlier requirements, particularly around repatriation coverage, creating challenges for applicants and employers.

Officials said the adjustment does not change the Peak Seasonal Visa itself. Migrants will continue to work in eligible seasonal roles for up to seven months, while employers will still be able to use the visa to address short-term labour needs.

Applications submitted before April 19, 2026, will not be affected. Those already in process will be assessed under transitional arrangements based on the revised requirements.
