The agreement introduces two Temporary Employment Entry (TEE) visa categories for highly skilled occupations and a limited number of professions considered iconic to India.

The India-New Zealand Free Trade Agreement (FTA) came into force on October 20, 2026, introducing new work visa options for Indian professionals, extended post-study work rights for some Indian graduates and a working holiday scheme for young Indian nationals.

The agreement includes two new Temporary Employment Entry (TEE) visa categories for highly skilled occupations and a limited number of professions considered iconic to India. It also provides for expanded post-study work opportunities and commitments relating to employment rights for Indian students studying in New Zealand.

Under the new TEE visa pathways, which became available yesterday, up to 5,000 visa holders can be in New Zealand at any one time. Most of these places will be allocated to skilled occupations already identified on the country's Green List.

However, applicants will still have to meet New Zealand's immigration requirements. They must have a qualifying job offer from an accredited employer, meet the relevant qualification and English language requirements, and satisfy health, character and identity checks.

TEE visas will be valid for three years. The visa categories will not provide a pathway to residence, meaning holders will not gain a route to permanent residence through these visas alone.

Longer post-study work rights for Indian PhD graduates

From November 16, 2026, Indian graduates who complete PhDs in New Zealand will become eligible for post-study work visas of up to four years, an increase from the current maximum of three years.

The change will give eligible Indian PhD graduates additional time to work in New Zealand after completing their studies. However, the extended period applies specifically to Indian graduates with New Zealand PhDs.

The agreement also addresses the in-study work rights of Indian students. Eligible students of all nationalities, including Indians, can currently work up to 25 hours a week while studying.

If New Zealand changes its in-study work policy in the future, the FTA commits the country to allowing Indian students to work at least 20 hours a week while studying.

The agreement also provides for a new working holiday scheme for Indian citizens aged 18 to 30. The scheme will be introduced within two years of the FTA coming into force. It will be capped at 1,000 places annually, with successful applicants allowed to spend up to 12 months in New Zealand.

The scheme will offer eligible young Indians an opportunity to spend time in the country under a temporary arrangement. However, the annual cap will limit the number of participants.

All the new pathways will operate within New Zealand's existing immigration framework. Applicants and visa holders must continue to meet the relevant eligibility and visa conditions, and the agreement does not automatically grant work or residence rights to Indian citizens.
