How to extend your stay in Germany after completing your studies

International students and trainees who complete their studies or vocational training in Germany can remain in the country for up to 18 months to look for employment through the Germany Job Seeker Visa.

The visa is offered to foreign nationals who have already completed a recognised degree or vocational training programme in Germany and wish to stay longer to secure a job. Once employment is found, visa holders can apply for a work residence permit or, depending on their qualifications, an EU Blue Card.

Who is eligible?

The Job Seeker Visa is available to third-country nationals who require a visa to remain in Germany after completing their studies or training. Applicants must demonstrate that they have sufficient financial resources to support themselves during their stay and that their qualifications are recognised in Germany or equivalent to a German qualification.


The visa requirement does not apply to citizens of European Union and European Economic Area countries.

Individuals who have already secured a job offer and possess a valid employment contract do not need a Job Seeker Visa and can instead apply directly for a work visa.

How to apply

Applications must be submitted to the local Foreigners' Office (Ausländerbehörde) responsible for the applicant's place of residence in Germany. Applicants are advised to schedule an appointment in advance and provide details of their intention to remain in the country for job-search purposes.

The processing time is typically between four and six weeks, while the application fee is €75.

Which documents are required

Applicants must submit a completed application form, a valid passport, their current visa or residence permit, proof of health insurance and evidence of completing their degree or training programme.

They must also provide proof of financial means. This can be shown through a blocked account containing at least €1,027 per month to cover living expenses or a formal declaration from a sponsor agreeing to cover all costs during the stay.

What are the benefits and limitations?

The visa allows graduates and trainees to extend their stay in Germany specifically to search for employment. It can later be converted into a work visa or an EU Blue Card if the applicant secures a qualifying job.

Unlike student visa holders, individuals on a Job Seeker Visa can work for more than 20 hours per week.

However, the visa cannot be extended beyond its validity period. Applicants must find employment within the 18-month period if they wish to continue living and working in Germany. They are also subject to normal tax obligations on income earned while in Germany.

Validity period

The Job Seeker Visa is valid for up to 18 months. German authorities state that the 18-month period begins immediately after the completion of studies or vocational training, not from the date the visa application is submitted. Applicants are therefore advised to plan their job search and application timelines carefully.
