The policy outlines clear rules for how long graduates can remain in the country to gain work experience after finishing their course.
Duration depends on qualification level
Students who complete a Master’s or Doctoral degree in New Zealand and study for at least 30 weeks are eligible for a Post Study Work Visa of up to three years. For those completing qualifications at level 8 or below, the visa duration matches the length of their study programme. Authorities calculate this based on the official offer of place issued by the education provider.
For example, if a course duration is listed as 32 weeks in the offer of place, the Post Study Work Visa will also be granted for 32 weeks.
No extension for delays in study
Authorities have clarified that delays in completing a course will not lead to a longer visa duration. If a student fails a course or takes more time than originally planned, the visa length will still be based on the initial study duration. In such cases, immigration authorities may seek additional information from the education provider to verify the student’s study details.
The guidelines underline that students must plan their study timelines carefully, as the Post Study Work Visa duration is fixed and determined at the time of assessment based on the approved course structure.
