To tackle growing labour shortages, Germany is focusing on attracting skilled workers from India, following new migration measures recently approved by Chancellor Olaf Scholz’s Cabinet. The move aims to streamline immigration processes and support the integration of Indian workers, addressing the critical workforce gaps caused by an ageing population.

Germany, known for having the strongest economy in the European Union, faces increasing pressure to secure skilled labour to maintain economic momentum. Hubertus Heil, the German Labour Minister, emphasized India’s importance, saying, "Germany views India as an especially important partner when it comes to the issue of skilled labour migration."

The newly approved migration framework underscores the deepening economic relationship between Germany and India. With a focus on long-term economic sustainability, the German government aims to attract qualified Indian professionals across various sectors to address workforce gaps.

New Measures to Simplify Migration for Indian Workers
On October 16, the German government approved 30 new measures, focusing on easing visa processes and improving integration for Indian nationals. A significant development is the digitalization of visas by the end of 2024, which is expected to reduce the waiting period for visa approvals. Germany had already shortened visa processing times for Indian workers from nine months to two weeks, a shift expected to benefit nearly 400,000 skilled workers.

Further, the Federal Labor Office is enhancing its outreach to Indian students already residing in Germany, aiming to guide them through employment opportunities. Language barriers, a major challenge for Indian migrants, are also being addressed with plans to offer German language classes to workers planning to relocate. These efforts reflect Germany's proactive approach to attract talent despite the preference of many Indian professionals for English-speaking countries.

Growth in Indian Workforce in Germany
The number of Indians employed in skilled roles in Germany has surged significantly. In 2015, only about 23,000 Indian nationals held such positions. By February 2024, that figure had soared to 137,000, marking a 495% increase over the decade.

The latest statistics reveal that in 2024 alone, the number of Indian workers increased by 23,000 compared to the previous year. Indian professionals also demonstrate high employability, with an unemployment rate of 3.7% among them—significantly lower than Germany’s overall rate of 7.1%.
