Canada updates and personalise work permit processing time, what does it mean for Indians?
The Canadian government has launched a new feature that provides exact estimates for processing times related to work permit extensions and post-graduation work permits. Indian applicants can now view their estimated wait times directly linked to ...

Canada has made its work permit processing-time system more personalised, allowing applicants in Canada to estimate their remaining wait based on when they applied.
Canada’s immigration department has updated its processing-times webpage to show estimated waiting periods based on the date an application was submitted. Indian applicants in Canada can now select “Temporary residence” and then “Work permit extension in Canada” to see an estimated remaining wait time in weeks. The tool also shows how many applicants are ahead of them and the total number of applications awaiting a decision.

As of September 26, 2026, about 202,900 work permit applications were awaiting decisions, according to the latest data displayed by the department. The personalised estimate is available to applicants in Canada who are extending an existing work permit. It also covers workers seeking changes to the conditions of their current permit.
For Indian students who have graduated from Canadian institutions, the tool also provides an estimate for first-time PGWP applications. Applicants who have not yet submitted an application can check the estimated wait time based on applying at the time of the search.
Previously, Canada’s processing-time webpage had a single “Work permit in Canada” option. It provided an estimate based on when the applicant checked the website rather than when the application was submitted. That option remains available, but is now intended for non-PGWP applicants in Canada applying for their first work permit.
For workers whose existing permits are approaching expiry, the application date can also be important because of maintained status. Those who apply to extend their work permit before it expires can generally continue working under the conditions of their existing permit while the extension application is being processed, provided they remain in Canada.

Before this, Canada had also introduced a temporary measure in June 2026 for certain provincial nominees seeking to extend work permits while their permanent residence applications were being processed. Eligible applicants under the base Provincial Nominee Program can apply for a bridging open work permit earlier than normally allowed, without first receiving an acknowledgement of receipt for their permanent residence application.
The temporary measure is scheduled to remain in place until December 31, 2026. Canada first introduced personalised processing-time estimates for citizenship and permanent residence applications in October 2025.
