Indians have built communities across the globe, from North America and Europe to the Gulf and Southeast Asia. According to the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), Government of India, the Indian diaspora is the largest in the world and includes both Non-Resident Indians (NRIs) and Persons of Indian Origin (PIOs). Based on the MEA's latest Population of Overseas Indians data, here are the seven countries with the highest number of people of Indian origin and Indian citizens living overseas.

The United States tops the list with more than 5.4 million people of Indian origin and Indian citizens. Over the years, it has become a preferred destination for Indian students, skilled professionals, entrepreneurs and business owners. Indians have a strong presence in sectors such as technology, healthcare, finance, research and education. Today, the Indian community is one of the largest and fastest-growing immigrant groups in the US.

Nearly 3.57 million Indians live in the United Arab Emirates, making it the second-largest destination for the Indian diaspora. Many Indians have moved to the UAE for jobs in construction, retail, hospitality, healthcare, banking, aviation and technology, while thousands also run successful businesses. The country's close proximity to India and frequent flight connections have made it a popular choice for both workers and entrepreneurs.​

Malaysia is home to more than 2.91 million overseas Indians. The Indian community has been part of the country for generations, with many families tracing their roots back to the 19th century. Today, Indians contribute to Malaysia's economy through business, education, healthcare, manufacturing and public services, while continuing to preserve their cultural traditions.

Canada has nearly 2.88 million people of Indian origin and Indian citizens. More than 2.46 million Indians live and work in Saudi Arabia.
