A new travel keepsake called the Karnataka Philately Passport is drawing crowds at post offices in Bengaluru, offering travellers a way to document their journeys through commemorative postage stamps and special postal cancellations instead of digital check-ins, as per a Times of India report. The initiative has revived interest in philately, or stamp collecting, by combining it with travel experiences.
The passport works much like a regular travel passport, but instead of immigration stamps, holders collect commemorative stamps and special cancellations issued by India Post's philatelic bureaus and participating post offices across Karnataka. Each cancellation marks a place visited, creating a personalised record of travel.
What is a Philately Passport?
The Philately Passport is a booklet designed for travellers and stamp collectors to collect exclusive postal cancellations from different destinations. Every stop adds a unique cancellation to the passport, turning it into a souvenir that records travel through official postal markings.
The concept draws inspiration from the traditional practice of collecting postage stamps and postmarks, a hobby that was popular before the digital era. The Karnataka initiative gives the practice a modern twist by encouraging people to explore destinations while building a collection of official postal impressions.

The passport has attracted interest from both experienced philatelists and first-time collectors. For many travellers, it offers an alternative to digital photographs and social media posts by creating a physical record of places they have visited.

The growing demand has led to queues at some Bengaluru post offices, according to a report by Times of India, where people are purchasing the passport and collecting the first set of commemorative cancellations.
How does it work?
Travellers purchase the Philately Passport and carry it while visiting participating philatelic bureaus or designated post offices. At each location, they can obtain a special postal cancellation or commemorative stamp unique to that destination. Over time, the passport becomes a collection of official markings representing different places visited across the state.
The initiative reflects a renewed interest in philately by combining it with tourism. Instead of preserving memories only through smartphones, travellers can build a physical collection of stamps and cancellations that commemorate their journeys, echoing a tradition that predates the digital age.
