The US Citizenship and Immigration Services on March 30 said it has tightened screening and vetting for immigration applicants after finding gaps in earlier processes. The agency said the review found that some applicants for naturalisation and permanent residence were “not sufficiently vetted,” and approvals were granted in cases that should not have passed scrutiny.

The update follows directives and presidential proclamations that restrict entry from several countries. USCIS said these measures aim to strengthen national security and ensure that only eligible individuals receive immigration benefits.

Gaps identified in earlier screening

USCIS said its internal review of pending applications showed weaknesses in previous vetting systems. The agency said, “Many applicants for naturalization and lawful permanent residence were not sufficiently vetted,” adding that such gaps “expose the United States to significant national security and public safety risks.”

The agency also stated that these shortcomings affected the integrity of the immigration system and required immediate corrective steps.

New measures and policy actions

To address the issue, USCIS said it has issued multiple policy memoranda placing holds on certain applications, including asylum and diversity visa-related adjustment of status cases linked to high-risk countries.

The agency outlined several steps already implemented. These include shorter validity periods for some work permits, stricter identity checks using biometric verification, and expanded screening such as social media and financial background checks.

USCIS also said it has launched additional review processes, including re-interviews and background checks under a dedicated vetting programme.

Further, the agency said it is improving coordination with other departments to track criminal records and biometric data in real time before final decisions are made on applications.

USCIS said it has also started a country-specific risk assessment exercise in coordination with the State Department to identify fraud indicators and security concerns. Based on these findings, the agency is preparing updated guidance for officers handling immigration cases.

Continued focus on stricter vetting

USCIS said it will continue to review applications on hold and lift restrictions where appropriate after detailed checks. The agency stated, “USCIS will continue to strengthen our screening and vetting procedures to ensure maximum protection for national security and public safety, and to root out fraud in the immigration system.”

The agency added that its ongoing efforts are aimed at ensuring that “only eligible and vetted individuals are granted immigration benefits,” reinforcing its focus on stricter enforcement and system integrity.
