Electronic visas accounted for 82 per cent of all visa applications in India this year, rising from 79 per cent in 2024, according to a report released on Wednesday by Atlys, a visa processing platform. The data points to a growing preference among Indian travellers for simplified digital entry processes.

The report highlighted that the UAE, Vietnam, Indonesia, Hong Kong, and Egypt were among the most popular e-Visa destinations in 2025. Sri Lanka saw the sharpest increase, with applications rising nearly seven times compared to last year, while Georgia recorded a 2.6-fold growth. The findings reflect rising interest in emerging destinations that have adopted digital visa systems.

Asian countries remain the largest drivers of e-Visa adoption. Sri Lanka, Vietnam, Japan, South Korea, Singapore, and Indonesia now provide stays ranging from 14 to 90 days. Vietnam issues e-Visas valid for 90 days with a 30-day stay. In Africa, Egypt, Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda, and Morocco offer online visa access with stays of 30 to 90 days. In Europe, Albania, Moldova, and Russia accept e-Visa applications from Indians. Cuba, Suriname, Colombia, and the Bahamas have adopted similar systems in the Caribbean and Latin America. Australia and New Zealand continue to expand e-Visas and electronic travel authorisations.

Commenting on the findings, Mohak Nahta, Founder and CEO of Atlys, said: “Indian travellers increasingly value speed and certainty, and e-Visas deliver both. The ability to apply online and receive approvals quickly has made last-minute and short-haul trips far more feasible. Countries that have adopted digital visa systems are already seeing the benefits in terms of higher visitor numbers from India.”

The report underlined that e-Visas have shifted from niche offerings to mainstream entry systems over the past decade. Governments worldwide are adopting digital visa models to boost tourism flows from India, aligning with changing traveller expectations.
