In a move aimed at prioritising domestic access to national parks, US President Donald Trump announced on Thursday that entry fees for foreign tourists will be increased while remaining low for Americans. The announcement came during a rally in Iowa, where Trump also kicked off a year-long celebration marking 250 years of the United States.
“For this anniversary, I've just signed an executive order to raise entrance fees for foreign tourists while keeping prices low for Americans,” Trump told the crowd. “The national parks will be about America First.”
The executive order instructs the US Interior and State Departments to promote international tourism to the national park system, while also using the additional revenue to upgrade infrastructure and improve visitor experience.
The directive marks a rare instance where the Trump administration, known for its scepticism on climate issues, has promoted environmental assets and public green spaces. The order states that funds collected from foreign visitors will be allocated to “enhance enjoyment” and maintain the country’s expansive network of protected areas.
However, the order also rolls back a 2017 directive issued by former President Barack Obama, which focused on “promoting diversity and inclusion in our national parks.” This repeal aligns with Trump’s broader stance against Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) initiatives.
Meanwhile, conservation groups have raised alarms about staffing shortages. Since Trump assumed office in January, hundreds of permanent staff members at the National Park Service have been laid off, even as the peak summer travel season approaches.
