The Wave, a sandstone formation in Arizona’s Vermilion Cliffs National Monument, is one of the most exclusive tourist destinations in the United States. To protect its fragile environment, access is strictly limited to only 64 visitors per day, determined through a lottery system.

Permits are divided between two lotteries: the Advanced Lottery and the Daily Lottery. The Advanced Lottery allocates permits to 48 individuals or 12 groups each day, with applications submitted online four months in advance. In contrast, the Daily Lottery offers permits for 16 individuals or 4 groups per day, requiring applicants to be present within a geofenced area and apply via mobile two days before their desired hike.

These strict measures ensure minimal environmental impact while allowing a small number of lucky visitors to experience The Wave’s unique beauty. The limited slots and competitive lottery process highlight the importance of sustainable tourism at this natural wonder. Visitors need to plan ahead and respect the rules to preserve this pristine site for future generations.

The Wave in Arizona’s Vermilion Cliffs National Monument is a natural wonder that sees limited access to protect its fragile environment. Permits are issued through two lottery systems: the Advanced Lottery and the Daily Lottery.

1. Advanced Lottery

  • How It Works: This online lottery allows applicants to apply during any calendar month for permits four months in advance.
  • Key Dates: The lottery is conducted on the first of the following month at 9:00 AM, with results sent out via email immediately.
  • Permit Allocation: A total of 48 people or 12 groups (whichever comes first) are granted permits each day through this system.

2. Daily Lottery

  • How It Works: Applications for this lottery are accepted two days before the intended hike between 6:00 AM and 6:00 PM. Submissions require a mobile device within a geofenced area, with location services activated.
  • Results & Process: Winners are notified at 7:15 PM the same evening. The following day, permits are issued at 8:30 AM after a mandatory safety briefing. Hikes to The Wave take place the day after.
  • Permit Allocation: Permits are limited to 16 people or 4 groups per day.
