Why Greece leads the 2026 index
The ranking evaluates destinations using expert input and data across categories such as visas, cost of living, integration, health care, and housing. This is the first time Greece has taken the top position.International Living noted that private health care remains affordable. Its Greece correspondent, Leena Horner, said her private health care “has been consistently good” and costs her and her husband EUR 250 a month. The release also highlighted that retirees can rent seaside homes for EUR 600 to EUR 1,000 a month. Weather conditions—hot, dry summers and relatively mild winters—remain a draw for those looking for predictable year-round living.
Residency pathways also played a role. Greece’s Golden Visa programme continues to offer one of Europe’s more accessible routes to long-term residence and citizenship.
