Thailand's popular tourist destination Phuket has launched a new user-friendly online visa extension system. The Immigration Bureau Commissioner, Pol Lt Gen Itthiphon Itthisanronnachai, unveiled this new initiative, that will allow foreigners under the 12 specified visa categories to apply for visa extensions online.
The move aligns with Lt Gen Itthiphon's mission to streamline immigration procedures, ensuring efficiency and accessibility, especially during the upcoming New Year holidays. Phuket, being a key tourist hub in the upper southern region, has been a focal point for the government's efforts to facilitate movement, including visa waivers for Chinese and Indian tourists, which have proven to be successful based on tourist statistics.
In December, Phuket Airport experienced a significant influx of visitors, with Russians leading the pack at an impressive daily average of 3,600 arrivals. China, the United Kingdom, and India closely followed, with daily averages of 1,500, 780, and 720 visitors, respectively. The total projected tourist inflow through the airport for the month is an impressive 350,000.
The recently launched online visa extension system, named 'E-Extension,' simplifies the extension process for the 12 specified visa categories. Tourists can now submit documents and schedule appointments online, ultimately receiving a physical stamp to extend their visas, as reported by the Phuket News.
Operational at Immigration Bureau 1 in Bangkok and Immigration Offices in populous areas like Chonburi, Chiang Mai, and Phuket, the E-Extension Visa Service marks a significant step in modernizing immigration procedures. However, specific details about the E-Extension service for foreigners in Phuket are yet to be officially disclosed on the Phuket Immigration website.
Lt Gen Itthiphon plans to meet with local immigration officers to address potential issues, gather feedback, and consider improvements. Launched as a trial in November last year in Bangkok, the E-Extension service is a collaboration with VFS GLOBAL, the authorized partner for the UK government to handle passport applications from British citizens.
