Thailand welcomed over 35 million international tourists in 2024, exceeding the government’s target as the nation focuses on revitalizing its economy, officials announced on Monday. Tourism, a key contributor to Thailand’s economy, accounts for nearly 20% of the GDP but has faced challenges following the COVID-19 pandemic and evolving travel trends.

According to the Ministry of Sports and Tourism, the total visitor count in 2024 was just four million short of the record 39 million seen in 2019, before the pandemic disrupted global travel. China regained its position as Thailand’s leading source of tourists, with over six million visitors last year, followed by Malaysia and India.

Thailand’s government is optimistic about sustaining tourism growth this year. Factors such as relaxed visa rules for several countries and the upcoming third season of the popular television series The White Lotus—set in Thai luxury hotels—are expected to attract more international visitors. The legalization of same-sex marriage is also anticipated to boost LGBTQ+ tourism to the nation.

For 2025, Thailand has set ambitious targets, aiming to welcome a record 40 million foreign visitors and 200 million domestic trips, generating an estimated 2.8 trillion baht (₹2.14 lakh crore) in revenue. Tourism plays a vital role in the Thai economy, contributing 12% to the GDP and supporting nearly 20% of jobs.

Tourist spending in 2024 generated approximately 1.6 trillion baht (₹1.3 lakh crore), according to Tourism Minister Sorawong Thienthong. To boost international arrivals, the Thai government, under former Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin, introduced measures such as free visa programs for Chinese and Indian travelers.

With 2024 surpassing expectations, the government has set an ambitious target of welcoming 39 million tourists in 2025. The World Bank predicts that Thailand will fully recover to pre-pandemic levels by 2025, although spending per tourist remains lower than before.

Thailand's visa requirements for Indian travelers

Thailand has implemented a visa-free entry policy for Indian tourists, allowing them to stay in the country for up to 60 days without the need for a visa. This policy aims to simplify travel and encourage more Indian visitors to explore Thailand’s vibrant culture, pristine beaches, and iconic landmarks.

To enter Thailand visa-free, Indian travelers must ensure their passports are valid for at least six months from the date of entry. While specific proof of financial stability is not mandatory, it is advisable to carry evidence of sufficient funds to cover the duration of the stay.

Travelers should also have a confirmed return or onward ticket to demonstrate their intent to leave the country within the permitted time frame. Proof of accommodation, such as hotel bookings or an invitation letter from a host, is also recommended to facilitate smooth entry.

For those planning to stay longer than 60 days or traveling for purposes other than tourism, such as business or education, an appropriate visa must be obtained in advance through the Royal Thai Embassy or Consulate.
