Tangier, a budget-friendly alternative to the more expensive Marrakech, has become a popular destination along the so-called "Moroccan Riviera." Located just a short distance from Gibraltar and only an hour's ferry ride from Spain's Tarifa, this coastal city has a rich history as an international zone governed by European powers in the early 20th century. Its unique blend of cultural influences attracted a host of celebrities, including Woolworth heiress Barbara Hutton and Beat Generation writer William S. Burroughs.
While the more famous Marrakech boasts its iconic Majorelle Gardens and Yves Saint Laurent Museum—both worthy of a visit—Tangier, a sprawling port city that once captivated writers like Paul Bowles and Jean Genet, offers an even more authentic Moroccan experience. Known for its fragrant spice-filled air, Tangier is home to golden sandy beaches, a bustling medina that feels genuine and uncommercialized, and an abundance of affordable restaurants serving local delicacies. Recently, the city has also seen the emergence of stylish, value-for-money luxury hotels, and the hustle of aggressive street vendors is noticeably less intense.
The real charm of Tangier, however, reveals itself in winter when the tourist crowds have thinned, and the weather remains pleasantly warm enough to relax on the beach in peace. Whether you're seeking laid-back bohemian hangouts near the souk, chic hotel retreats, or immersive cultural experiences, Tangier offers a unique blend of North African warmth and European flair, with something for everyone to enjoy.
Things to do in Tangier
As per a Condé Nast Traveller report, here are the things that you can do in Tangier.
Visit the souks
Tangier’s souks, the Grand Socco and Petit Socco, offer an authentic shopping experience less commercialized than those in Marrakech. Divided by specialty, you’ll find potters and basket weavers on Mouahidines Street, leather makers near the Petit Socco, and jewelers along Touahine Street. Bargaining is key, with prices often reduced to a third of the asking price. After shopping, unwind with a bag of ghriba coconut cookies while strolling through the nearby serene Mendoubia Gardens.
After navigating the maze-like streets of the medina, head to the Kasbah, a former citadel dating back to the 10th century. The area is filled with beautiful mansions behind painted doors, with fountains and lush courtyards shaded by bougainvillea and orange trees. Visit the Kasbah Museum to admire ancient ceramics and Roman artifacts, then enjoy a pistachio and honey pastry at Café Colón. Finish by heading to the Place de la Kasbah for stunning views of the medina and the Strait of Gibraltar.
The Cinémathèque de Tanger, located on 9 Avril 1947 Square (Souk Barra), features an iconic Art Deco façade and is housed in the Cinema Rif, which opened in 1938. Historically important for promoting Moroccan filmmakers and introducing global culture to North Africa, it was a hub for artists and intellectuals in the '50s and '60s. Today, the venue attracts a bohemian crowd who come to watch Moroccan and North African film classics or relax in the cozy café adorned with old film posters and vintage décor.

Train to Rabat
Morocco's new high-speed Al Boraq train network makes it easy to reach Rabat, the country’s capital, in just over an hour. Divided by the Bouregreg River, Rabat is a laidback city often overlooked by tourists. Visit the Hassan Tower to see the ruins of a 12th-century mosque, explore the UNESCO-listed medina, and enjoy fresh seafood at The Dhow, a restaurant on a converted fishing boat.
